Canine Caregiver, CARE

Summary:

The ASPCA Canine Annex for Recovery & Enrichment (CARE) program provides care for neglected and abused dogs that have been rescued from all five NYC boroughs. The Canine Caregiver will provide ongoing daily care and medical care for vulnerable dogs housed in the ASPCA Recovery & Enrichment Center.

Primary responsibilities include cleaning and maintaining kennels, providing food and water, monitoring the mental and physical health of these dogs, conducting rounds, administering medication and performing physical therapy for anti-cruelty dogs. Additionally, the CCG will provide treatment, monitor progress and report observations to the ASPCA Veterinarian.

Responsibilities:

Direct Care (80%)

  • Provide direct care for dogs in the CARE Center which includes the daily cleaning of the animals and kennels, routinely scheduled walks, food and water and enrichment opportunities to improve the quality of life
  • Closely monitor the health and behavioral status of dogs and report observations to the medical and behavioral teams
  • Collaborate with fellow CCG team members to ensure continuity of care
  • Ensure unoccupied kennels with dogs are sanitized in line with ASPCA cleaning and disease management protocols
  • Provide exercise and socialization to anti-cruelty dogs based on the individual needs of the animal
  • Make certain entire facility including exam rooms, playrooms and kennels are kept extremely clean through the day
  • Walk dogs outside in rain, snow, cold, and hot weather as instructed
  • Assist in keeping supplies stocked by noting when supplies are running low
  • Demonstrate strict adherence to all ASPCA safety, infection control, handling and conduct protocols
  • Maintain open mind regarding changes and be willing to learn, implement, and teach new protocols
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings and training classes
  • Perform related duties as assigned

Medical Care (20%)

  • Provide clinical care for anti-cruelty dogs of the CARE Center which includes food and water, topical and oral medications and physical therapy
  • Evaluate medical data from logs and ensure treatment protocols are administered
  • Provide rounds for dogs in accordance with ASPCA protocols
  • Manually update medical charts and enter information into PetPoint database system
  • Provide specialized care for dogs that are victims of abuse and neglect

Qualifications:

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, Ability to restrain or handle dogs of varying temperaments for medical procedures, Ability to walk, bend, stand and reach constantly during a minimum 8-hour day, Ability to work independently, as well as be a team player, Able to lift and carry up to 40 lbs with assistance repeatedly throughout the day, Able to safely walk and handle dogs 100 lbs or over, up and down stairs, Basic computer skills, including use of data entry programs (Pet Point and Impromed), Must be detailed oriented with a nurturing ability to care for vulnerable animal population

Education and Work Experience:

High School Diploma (Required)Caring for Compromised Animals Experience, Kennel, Shelter, Veterinarian Hospital or Equivalent Experience

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
